Western JJ for 2006-2007!

We run a Beginners' Program at the University of Western Ontario. Our club specializes in introducing complete beginners to the art of Jiu-jitsu. Our style of Jiu-jitsu mixes grappling moves, techniques and strategies from Judo (Kano Jiu-jitsu), traditional Japanese Jiu-jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and striking techniques from various arts (see 'About WJJ's Curriculum link).

Our curriculum is highly structured, aimed at beginners, andtprovides technical instruction in a safe, structured and progressive manner in order to introduce basic techniques and strategies of Jiu-jitsu. If you are looking for a "non-structured" environment then this club is mostly likely not for you, as mentioned a couple times, we have a structured program aimed at beginners who have little to no knowledge of Jiu-jitsu. If you are a 20th degree Universe-Wide Champion Grandmaster then this club will probably seem too structured for you. However, all are welcome to join.

We are a RECREATIONAL martial arts club. None of us are going to compete in the Olympics in the near future, and we like our training respectful, safe, structured and laid-back. There is no pressure to enter tournaments, however some of our members have competed in the major grappling events in Ontario (Joslin's, CJA, GTA Challenge, etc). But it is in no way mandatory.

Belt testing is held twice a year, and belts will be given under Judo Ontario (Kano Jiu-jitsu). Belts test run usually from 3 to 8 hours depending on belt-level, and you will have to come regularly to have any chance of passing. Please see "About WJJ's Belt Testing" link.

The only equipment that you need to purchase is a Judo gi (outfit). A basic Judo gi will cost anywhere from $60-$75 depending on your size, and we will take orders next week during the free classes and after. If you already have one, or can borrow a Judo gi off of a friend, then please wear it! Please note: Judo gis are much thicker than Karate gis, so we require you to own a Judo gi.

Practices will be held every: Monday and Wednesday at: 9:15pm-11:15pm, and sometimes Saturday mornings 11am-1pm (No practices: Mon Oct 9 & Wed Oct 18, and Sat Oct 7 due to holidays/exams). If you have night-class, it is ok, come after! Some classes will be cancelled due to use of room or exams, etc. We are scheduled to start Monday September 25 2006. More details will follow - keep tuned to this page or email westernjj@hotmail.com to receive an update/info prior to classes starting.

Practice Location: All practices are held in Alumni Hall Rm. 15 (basement gymnasium: Coe in the main doors, hang a left, follow hallway down to end you will see set of stairs on left going down, follow basement hallway around to left.

Cost: $70 per semester, OR, $130 for the year (September - April).

If you know anyone else who would like to join please bring them with you on the first night. You can sign up for Western JJ at the Membership booth at the UWO gym, at our booth during Clubs' Week, or at any of the following practices (first come, first serve, space is limited)!
